Hey! Welcome to Ty Treks Outdoor Adventure blog.
Ty Treks is a place where I share backpacking trips, photos and what I’ve learned along the way. Like most things, it started with curiosity, a little persistence, and learning as I went.
I grew up in the Midwest, where getting outside usually meant short walks, local parks, and the occasional camping trip. When I moved to Utah, everything changed. The mountains, the desert canyons, the wide-open spaces — it all pulled me in.
Started with short day hikes, then longer ones until we eventually tried backpacking…
At first I carried way too much weight, not wanting to invest a lot. I used cheap but heavy gear that didn’t always work, and made plenty of beginner mistakes. Over time, I began to upgrade gear, packing a little lighter, and really starting to enjoy this journey. Those early trips turned into longer ones — multi-day backpacking routes, with my longest trek to date stretching a full week.
I’m still learning. That’s kind of the point.
These days, I’m a single dad of a teenager, and someone who says yes to the outdoors not to escape life — but to gain a little perspective and adventure from it. Backpacking has become something I want to keep growing into, especially as I share this passion with my son and show him that adventure doesn’t have to be extreme to be meaningful. It’s about the exploration and solitude found in the great outdoors.

Why Ty Treks?
Because this is really about the long walk — through new places and through life.
I’m not trying to conquer anything. I’m just continuing to show up, put one foot in front of the other, and share my journey thru these beautiful places.
Over the next few years, my goal is to keep pushing my comfort zone — eventually working up to a long-distance thru-hike in the next five years.
If you’re new to backpacking, curious about getting started, or just want to follow the journey — you’re in the right place. Thank you for visiting!
